Continuing its commitment to Inspire creativity and support innovation, the Les Paul Foundation has awarded fourteen grants to organizations in New York, California, Wisconsin, Tennessee and New Jersey. Grants include funding to multiple music education programs that tell the Les Paul story and to hearing loss prevention and research programs.
Bonaroo Works Fund in Nashville is the charitable division of Bonaroo Music Festival. Its Notes for Notes music education program builds, equips and staffs after school recording studios called MusicBoxes within Boys & Girls Clubs. Funds from the Les Paul Foundation will support new studios in Brooklyn, Austin, Detroit, San Francisco and Atlanta. Bonarooworksfund.org
First Stage in Milwaukee, WI is one of the nation’s most acclaimed children’s theaters. Funds from the Les Paul Foundation will support the creation and implementation of an arts-integrated teaching-through-theater program based on the life of Les Paul. The program initially will be offered to ten third grade classes. www.firststage.org
The Grammy Foundation will create the Les Paul Centennial GRAMMY Signature School Community Award with funds provided by the Les Paul Foundation. The award recognizes high school music programs that display strong curricula and teaching in the area of guitar, jazz or music technology. www.grammyfoundation.org.
Guitars for Vets continues to provide the healing power of music by teaching veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder how to play guitar and providing a new guitar and accessories to each veteran who completes the course. Hearing Education and Awareness for Rockers (H.E.A.R.) is committed to raising awareness of the irreversible damage that loud music can cause to hearing. Little Kids Rock restores and revitalizes music education in public schools. Little Kids Rock provides not only instruments, but also ongoing teacher training to strengthen public school music education. With support of the Les Paul Foundation, the organization launched the Modern Band Program at the Les Paul Middle School and the Les Paul Modern Band Camp at two Los Angeles schools. Additionally, the Les Paul Honorary Composition & Recording Exhibition will feature students exhibiting their own multi-track recordings. Mahwah Township is building The Les Paul Plaza in the community that Les Paul called home for over fifty years with the support of the Les Paul Foundation. The plaza is scheduled to open in 2015.
The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) annually awards the Les Paul TEC Award to individuals, living or deceased, whose careers have best exemplified the spirit of creative and technical excellence in professional recording and sound. Waukesha County Museum in Wisconsin hosts one of the key exhibits on Les Paul. The Les Paul Foundation provided funding for the museum’s many educational programs that relay Les Paul’s story and for support of the exhibit.
Wisconsin School Music Association is hosting its annual Launchpad garage band competition with the coveted Les Paul Launchpad Award. In addition to band competition, the organization provides training about succeeding in the music business.
